Dir. Alfonso Cuarón. 2018, 134 mins. 70mm. In Spanish with English subtitles. With Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, Diego Cortina Autrey. Internationally renowned director Alfonso Cuarón’s return to Mexico is a vivid, emotional, and rawly self-reflexive portrait of a young woman navigating life as a domestic worker in 1970s Mexico City, where social unrest overlaps with private turmoil, and where professional challenges can be inextricable from personal ones. Winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography for Cuarón’s astonishing imagery—which manages to be virtuosic and intimate—Roma is the rare film fully deserving of the term “instant classic.” Roma was shot on digital 65mm and released to cinemas on 70mm film, promising a singularly transporting theatrical experience.
