The year is 1970, and an honest Party man is put in charge of the construction of a chemical factory in the small town where he used to live. He aspires to build a place where people can live and work in harmony, but townspeople, irate that the plant is destined for the site of a primeval wilderness, quickly put an end to such idealism. Kieslowski’s film explores the weakening of ties between people who make the decisions and those who must live with the consequences. Preceded by Slate (1976, 5 mins.), a compilation of out-takes from The Scar.
